Woodland survival craft knife review

Written by Dave Roderick

Since starting a bushcraft school, two years ago I have found there are some common questions that I am always asked; I saw this on the TV what do you think ? Could you easily survive off the land? Doesn’t that taste awful? But the one question I hadn’t anticipated that gets asked of me on pretty much every course was about my knife.

I always keep to hand a basic green handled frosts 740 knife. It’s always done me good when I needed it and I’ve never bothered to think much more about it. However in the modern day marketing frenzy my clients always seem a little disappointed with my choice of sub tenner tool.

My argument had been it does everything I ask of it and  its cheap and reliable. What more could I want? Well given the chance to try out the new Knife on the (forgive the pun) chopping block, I thought it would be a great opportunity to put my theories to the test.

Adjustable camp fire pot hanger

Written by Dave Roderick
Found these pics of the making of an adjustable pot hanger I made in camp a few years ago, I sometimes get groups to make these on the longer bushcraft courses as a way of getting them to see the resources and potential available to them in the wilderness. Am yet to try Richard Grave's giant version which he claims will hold a hammock. Well worth an afternoons crafting in the woods and bonus is you can hang the kettle off it at the end, and reward yourself with a brew. camp fire pothanger

Jack By The Hedge (Alliaria petiolata)

Written by Dave Roderick

Noticed on this mornings walk that there is a second coming of Hedge Garlic AKA Jack By The Hedge or garlic mustard. One of the three garlics that we have to use over here. As with the other two (Ramsons and three cornered leek) it has a very subtle flavour that doesn't stand up well to much cooking.
